What is life?

Updated: 2 days ago

I woke up this morning and read a text from an old friend who I haven’t been in contact with since 2016. He messaged me to share the news that someone we went to college with died yesterday. Someone who I literally haven’t thought about in years. And now, with this news, I am transported. To the year 2000. My mind takes me to where digital evidence cannot (I exchanged many emails with our mutual friend who passed, but from an account that has since been deleted).

The process of remembering the time we spent together emphasizes something I’ve been thinking about lately. That is, what is life?

I don’t think we’re humans who sometimes have spiritual experiences. I think we’re spiritual beings who have chosen to live in this material world to gather and have human experiences. From this perspective, life is an opportunity to be open and curious about what it feels like to be in a body with a head and a heart.

Each moment, open and curious. To be in each moment. Connected to what makes the heart send a message to the head that says, this is it. This is life.
